Weaving – associated with the Norns

Textile craftwork was well developed and fabrics and clothes were important goods for trade. Colourful tapestries and covers were woven with vertical looms from natural dyed wool and linen.

Using weaving tablets and small weaving combs, patterned tablet-woven bands were made from silk and silk yarn, imported from what we now call Asia.

The bands would be sewn onto clothing or onto textiles. With the aid of silver and gold wire, bespoke patterns and motifs could be made.

Weaving was also the domain of the three Norns, namely Urd, Verdandi and Skuld, who decided the destinies of all living beings by spinning the threads of life.
