Coin (miliaresion)

Byzantine silver coin minted in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) for Emperor Constantine IX (1042-1055). On the obverse side of the coin a praying Virgin Mary (a.k.a. Maria orans) with outstretched hands and open palms. On the reverse side is the Emperor with a cross and a sword. Under Constantine IX concave silver coins began to be minted, probably to make them harder. Part of a hoard find, Ocksarve, Hemse Parish, Gotland.
