40 Byzantine silver coins from Ocksarve hoard. Byzantine coins are found in many Scandinavian hoards due to the special contacts which existed between Scandinavia and the Byzantine Empire: trade, exchange of mercenaries and diplomatic ties. The distribution of the coins suggests that many arrived through trade. The Ocksarve hoard, which contained a total of 123 Byzantine silver coins, is unique. The coins are part of a hoard find, Ocksarve, Hemse Parish, Gotland.
