Wool fabric
Woollen garment fragment. The textile is woven in 2/2 twill, with a somewhat coarser quality than, for example, the diamond twills. The quality is appropriate for kirtles, trousers, cloaks or overcoats. 20 z-twist threads per centimetre in the warp. 12 z-twist threads per centimetre in the weft, which is a looser twist than the weft and somewhat thicker. Even if the quality is coarser than many other fabrics which have been preserved from the Birka graves, this is still a fine fabric and the weaving is even and consistent. The fabric is folded. Grave find, Birka, Bj 597, Adelsö Parish, Uppland.
