Ships reconstructed thanks to many finds

Many different types of objects associated with ships and seafaring have been found. For example, different kinds of rigging equipment, belaying pins, shroud pins, and accessories such as hooks, buoys and fragments of cordage and rope.

Thanks to the archaeological finds it has been possible to reconstruct Viking ships, and to research their seaworthiness and sailing characteristics. It has been possible to understand more about life on board and what resources shipbuilding required.

On board the long narrow warships there was minimal space for non-essentials. The spacious knarrs were better suited to settlers who could transport cargoes of cattle and equipment.

Knarrs and other commercial ships could perhaps maintain an average speed of 6 to 8 knots. But speed was dependent on the type of boat and the cargo. The warships could take advantage of their oarsmen to make them much quicker.
