Silk fabric

Fragment of a Chinese silk fabric, manufactured during the Tang dynasty (circa 618 to 700 CE). Raw silk in plain weave with warp floating, known as Han Damask. The fabric has a geometric pattern with alternating small squares and funnel-shaped quadrilaterals. The thread system is blue, and painted or printed with gold. Over the threadwork a passementerie braid of spiral silver thread has been sewn on. The textile fragment probably comes from a hat. Grave find, Birka, Bj 944, Adelsö Parish, Uppland.
