Picture stone

Sandstone picture stone. The shape suggests that it was originally one of a number of stones in a grave monument. The motif depicts seven men in long, floor length garments, probably caftans, and three of them are wearing “baggy trousers” with an eastern cut. Five of the men are brandishing horn-shaped drinking vessels, while the other two seem to be standing in some sort of building, sparring with drawn swords. One of them is dipping or lifting a beaker from a large pail between them. It is unclear exactly what the scene is about, but it appears to be a kind of ceremonial drinking activity. The scene is surrounded by a braid band. Tängelgårda, Läbro Parish, Gotland.
