Skull

Skull of a man who had undergone trepanning, a surgical intervention where parts of the skull on the right hand side were removed with a drill-like implement. The edges of the wound show traces of healing, demonstrating that the man survived the operation. Trepanning was carried out in order to cure internal diseases, wounds and other conditions that caused pressure on the brain and hence great pain. Grave find, Broa, Halla Parish, Gotland.
