Tabletwoven band

Patterned tablet-woven band with a gold thread weft. Only the weft has been preserved. The warp was probably of silk but as gold does not emit metal salts which help preserve the textile, it has not been preserved. But it did leave imprints on the gold thread and we can therefore reconstruct the patterns on the band. The band is one centimetre wide and in order to weave it, 25 tablets with four threads on each were required. The gold thread is 0.14 mm in diameter and was woven with two threads together. This type of band was used to decorate clothes and hats or items such as scabbards and bags. Grave find, Birka, Bj 750, Adelsö Parish, Uppland.
