Grivna

Eleven tongue-shaped and diamond-shaped silver grivnas (name for a currency: compare with the Hryvnia, the currency of modern-day Ukraine), from the Burge hoard. During the period of approximately 1000-1400 the grivnas were used as currency in Kyivan Rus. The weight of the grivnas (approximately 200 grammes) is equivalent of half a Russian pound or funt. The discovery of 23 grivnas in the Burge hoard is evidence of the lively contacts between Scandinavia and the Novgorod region towards the end of the Viking Age. The grivnas are part of a hoard find, Burge, Lummelunda Parish, Gotland.
