Coin (dirham)

Volga-Bulgar silver coin of pseudo-Samanid type, probably minted in Bolghar (now Bolgar in Tatarstan) in the beginning of the 10th century. On the obverse side of the coin are inscribed runes 'lutiR' or 'luti’. The runic inscription may be interpreted as a variation on the name of the god ’Lytir’ or as an inflection of the word ‘lýti’, (meaning stain, defect; shame).
