Boat

The Årby boat is a small red boat which, before being used for a 'ship burial', was sailed on lakes another small water courses. The boat is just over four metres long with a slender two plank design. The lower and bottom part are of oak, and the upper of spruce. The planks are joined together with iron rivets but wooden dowels were used for the three oak ribs. It was equipped with a pair of oars and a longer steering oar, which was probably used for journeys in difficult waters. The stern, as well as the starboard side (which was mostly reconstructed at a later point in time) was severely damaged during the 'högbrottet' and the possible plundering of the grave. Grave find, Årby, Rasbokil Parish, Uppland.
