Tabletwoven band

Tablet-woven band with individual twists. Woven with a double thread woollen yarn where the high twist gives the pattern a certain depth. The band was woven using twelve tablets. Both edge tablets on each side have four threads on each tablet, while the pattern tablets only have two threads each. This absence of threads means that a relief pattern occurs in the weaving. The pattern is produced by the tablets being turned individually so that the lost threads achieve a determined pattern. Width 0.8-0.9 cm, preserved length 28 cm. This band from Gotland differs from the bands found in Birka in that the latter have silk in the warp and pattern picked weft of gold or silver thread. Part of a hoard find in 'pasture land", Lilla Ringome, Alva Parish, Gotland.
