Rectangular brooch

Rectangular silver brooch. Decorated with animal heads and raised midsection. The composition is a variant of that of the one on the "paradise brooches", though without deer. The slightly raised round midsection resembles the "well" on the paradise brooches. Around this are eight animal heads depicted in Borre Style, four being seen from above on each side of the mid section and four sticking out their heads from the edge trim along the long sides of the brooch. The broad edge trims have six spikes which are reminiscent of the predators which surround the deer on the paradise brooches. Grave find, Birka, Bj 539, Adelsö Parish, Uppland.
