Coin (miliaresion)

Byzantine silver coin minted in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) for Emperor Romanos III Argyros (1028-1034). On the obverse side of the coin is a picture of the Virgin Mary carrying the baby Jesus in her arms. On the reverse side is Emperor Constantine IX with a cross and globus cruciger. Romanos III felt a deep reverence towards the Virgin Mary. Part of a hoard find, Ocksarve, Hemse Parish, Gotland.
