Strap devider

Strap divider in the form of a round, perforated and somewhat bulbous bronze disk. In the centre there is a stylised oval face with exophthalmos and pronounced nose. Above the chin/mouth there are pronounced furrows, four horizontal and one vertical. The significance of these is unclear, they may represent a stylised 'goatee' beard, but they may also bring to mind the myth of Loki who had his mouth sewn closed. The strap divider probably belonged to a baldric, serving as a link for four other straps. Grave find, Broa, Gotland.
