Icon

Icon, probably of the Virgin Mary. The image is fragmented and consists of the head and upper body. A large halo encircles her head and her hands are held directed upwards in front of her body. The icon is attached to an oblong, thinly gilded silver plate which may possibly be part of a fragmented armlet or other jewellery. Of Eastern origin, probably Byzantine. Part of a hoard find, Öster Ryftes, Fole Parish, Gotland.
