Pail

Outer casing and handle from a wooden pail. The outer casing consists of thin copper plates engraved in fields with 'trees of life' and different types of bird-shaped spiral decoration, partially in 'running dog' patterns. In these fields runs a row of diamond shapes on their sides. It is of British provenance, and Northumbria has been suggested as the place of manufacture. Grave find, Birka, Bj 507, Adelsö Parish, Uppland.
